Z5IIC Fish subject detection

The Nikon Z5IIC was launched 24th Sep 2026, the NEW feature introduced solely to this camera so far was FISH subject detection.

For many photographers, especially those biased to landscape, street, sports, commercial they would be wondering why Nikon would introduce such a niche detection subject.

The way I see it is a little differently, though FISH is a subject that is NOT mainstream, I am pretty confident that by introducing FISH subject detection overall AF tracking capability could be improved as I am sure AF algorithms would have to be optimized. Imagine the fish environment, it would normally be low lght & lower contrast environments so AF algorithms would be tweaked to work in low light low contrast scenes.

As can be seen in the Z5IIC's rear monitor screenshot below, I was using 3D tracking with FISH detection engaged.

In this post, I will be sharing my recordings of the Z5IIC's rear monitor with Fish subject detection engaged as I tested the camera's detection capability on different sea creatures at the Singapore Oceanarium.

Subject | JELLY FISH

Subject | LION FISH | MORAY EEL | Various Fish |

Subject | SHARKS | Various Fish |

Subject | ARCHER Fish | Various Fish |

From the above clips, it's pretty clear that:

  1. FISH subject detection works & it works very well

  2. Works on many sea creatures including Jellyfish or Eels

  3. Detection on Fish eye's was pretty aggressive even when subject was moving away or back facing.

  4. Works effectively even in very low light & low contrast environments

  5. Detection was accurate & precise.
